YouthCaN Med Technology and Environment in the Classroom
(Youth CaN Med Tec) - Lebanon

Period of Performance

January 29, 2003 through January 28, 2004

Themes

Youth education, environment, professional development

Project Goal

To introduce sustainable, systematic technology into Lebanese schools and a teacher training institute so that a threshold of educational leadership in the use and application of technology is cultivated.

Overview

The Lebanese government has identified its goal of expanding technology and internet access to all schools in the country in recognition of the educational and economic value of educational technology to the citizens of their country. YouthCaN used new technologies to enhance the understanding of environmental issues and to stimulate students to take steps in their local communities to address those issues. It stressed using technology with academic rigor in scientific methods and environmental education.

List of Partners

EDC staff, iEARN and dot-EDU partners ensured that project activities led to the achievement of two (2) Program Results (PRs):

PR1 - A trained cadre of Lebanese teachers able to engage their students in environmental projects, and interactions with other local and international schools. This is achieved by a combination of face-to-face and interactive online training.

Activities:

  1. Face-to-face one-day teacher training workshop on using online technology to promote discussion and interaction between classrooms, teachers and students;
  2. Eight (8) weeks of online interactive instruction; and
  3. Site visits to provide technical and/or program support to environmental clubs and teachers’/students’ projects.

PR2 - A selection of schools, located within USAID’s rural development cluster areas, willing and capable of working with local communities and municipalities on environmental awareness, environmental projects and community outreach—capitalizing on USAID’s existing programs and partnerships.

Activities:

  1. Work with local municipalities to recruit participating schools from rural areas of Lebanon to participate in both online and face-to-face workshops;
  2. Introduce methodologies in rural areas on how to join existing environmental awareness efforts both within Lebanon and internationally; and
  3. Publish a local “Environment” magazine with project reports, discussions, essays and other materials designed, edited and produced by students of rural Lebanon.
