Period of Performance: | June 2004 through June 2008 |
Themes:
Basic and adult education, teacher training, information communication technology
Project Goal:
The primary goal of this USAID-funded dot-EDU Award is to design, develop and pilot test appropriate and cost-effective technologies that will be used to provide learning opportunities for children and adults, and to train teachers, in Southern Sudan. The activity will develop three grades of interactive instructional radio programs that will complement and accelerate learning in core curriculum areas such as initial literacy and numeracy and which will have an impact on teachers’ behavior and community support for education. In particular, the activity will assess the feasibility of using VSAT technology and local radio stations for management, communication, training, community mobilization and perhaps instructional purposes.
List of Partners:
• Education Development Center
• Southern Sudan Secretariat of EducationEDC staff and dot-EDU partners will collaborate on the following activities:
• Development of 100 30-minute programs for each of Grades 1, 2 and 3 in Nairobi and Maridi, with accompanying guides for the teachers
• Broadcast of three years of programs that will enable one cohort of learners to cover three grades, and three cohorts to begin their education
• Set up of user groups (i.e. schools and out-of-school settings) that have wind-up radios, and basic instructional materials
• Radio-delivered training of 500 or more teachers
• Creation of a cadre of Southern Sudanese instructional materials writers who can contribute to meeting other educational priorities, and a fully equipped center in Maridi in which to develop them
• Installment of VSATs to support project communications
